When I was a child, I used to watch this French cartoon about the human body. It was called “Once upon a time… Life”, I watched it dubbed in Arabic at the time every day at around 5pm. It was fascinating to learn how the organs work together to combat biological threats. It taught me that the body is a self-sufficient system with every component having its own function in the fight. No matter how small, they each had a significant role to take the system back to its healthy state. It has been a while since I thought about that program! It wasn’t until few years back, when I had to learn about the cardiovascular system as part of my doctoral research, that I remembered those little creatures emulating the blood circulation.
Each of us have our own significant part in the fight; even when it is simply to stay home and limit social exchanges to essentials. We take our role seriously, because we are in this together!
Lately, since the COVID-19 situation had started, I began to think about that animated series often. I pictured Finland as one human body with every citizen and resident being a component in its self-sufficient system. Each of us have our own significant part in the fight; even when it is simply to stay home and limit social exchanges to essentials. We take our role seriously, because we are in this together! It is one body that will carry us through to a more hopeful future, where we can go back to planning life beyond the next week.
We are in this ‘body’ together, embracing the feeling of uncertainty! Putting our trust in the expert-led decisions. We will gradually heal and bounce back stronger and wiser; it is just a matter of time!
With the imported talent, Finland can bring back production to homeland, cover the shortage in medical staff, end the dilemma of seasonal work, accelerate growth and start exporting again.
Stronger together is not an overused cliché anymore – we are in fact stronger when we group our efforts and focus on the same goal. Think about rebuilding the economy after COVID-19, and how fast that could be achieved if we infuse international talents into the work force in Finland? The potentials are limitless!

That is what internationalisation brings! It is like dipping in an endless pool, because borders no longer define the limits. It is a tool to maximise talent utilisation and boosting the Finnish economy with all it needs, not just to bounce back but to succeed in the rear lights of COVID-19. With the imported talent, Finland can bring back production to homeland, cover the shortage in medical staff, end the dilemma of seasonal work, accelerate growth and start exporting again.
I have been thinking about this a lot, I can almost picture the world as one human body lending its forces to mend the wounds faster and reach full recovery. And I could not help but wonder – is it really a far-fetched idea?
